Size Guide

Yorkie size chart — measure before you buy.

The pet industry's XS is usually designed around a dog that weighs 10–14 lb. Sammy weighs 7 lb. He is, technically, extra-small. In practice, he swims in most things labelled XS. A Yorkie's narrow chest and fine neck sit at the low end of even the smallest sizes. This guide explains how to actually measure, and what to look for.

Weight-to-size quick reference

These are starting points. Always verify with a tape measure before ordering.

Weight Typical size label Notes
Under 4 lb (under 1.8 kg) XXS Puppies and very small adults. Few brands reach this size well.
4–7 lb (1.8–3.2 kg) XS Standard Yorkie range. This is where most of our testing lives.
7–10 lb (3.2–4.5 kg) S Larger Yorkies and Yorkie-crosses. More options at this range.

How to measure

Use a soft tape measure. Measure while your dog is standing. Add 1–2 cm to each measurement to allow for movement.

  • Chest (girth): The widest point of the ribcage, just behind the front legs. This is the most critical measurement. Many Yorkies measure 10–13 inches here.
  • Neck: Where the collar sits — the base of the neck, above the shoulders. For Yorkies this is usually 7–9 inches. Brands consistently get this wrong: if the neck opening is designed for a Cavalier, it won't fit over a Yorkie's broader-than-expected head.
  • Back length: From the base of the neck (where the collar sits) to the base of the tail. A standard-sized Yorkie is usually 9–12 inches. This determines whether the coat rides up over the eyes or leaves the back end exposed.

The honest truth Even with accurate measurements, expect to return at least one in three items. Manufacturers rarely test on actual Yorkies. When a listing shows a Yorkie in the product photos, that's marketing. When we show a Yorkie in our photos, it's Sammy, and he was either comfortable or the item went back.

Once you have your measurements, start with the clothing department — it has the broadest range of properly-sized garments we've tested.
