A Field Note

On choosing the right food.

Four small, repeatedly-useful instructions, refined over months of testing with a 3.2 kg Yorkshire Terrier who has opinions about everything.

i

Small-breed kibble, always.

Standard kibble is the size of a Yorkie's molar. Small-breed formulas have smaller, denser pieces designed for tiny mouths.

ii

Single-protein for sensitive guts.

Yorkies are prone to soft stools. A single protein source — chicken, fish, or lamb — narrows the guesswork when something disagrees.

iii

Treats are calories.

A Yorkie's daily calorie budget is roughly 200. Two large biscuits is most of breakfast — break treats into thirds.

iv

Fresh water, twice a day.

Small bowls grow biofilm faster than large ones. Refresh, don't top up.
